New York, NY (August 4, 2017) – In the wake of President Donald Trump’s announcement on Twitter banning transgender Americans from joining or serving in the military in any capacity, NowThis spoke with retired US Navy SEAL and transgender veteran Kristin Beck at her farm in Maryland. On the heels of 56 US Generals coming out in opposition to President Trump’s ban, the Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipient spoke with NowThis about her experience being transgender in the military, and her nuanced position within the battle for trans rights.

“I’m polarizing on both sides,” admitted Beck. “I’m polarizing to Democrats because I don’t fit their agenda, I don’t fit their narrative. I’m a gun-toting, kind of conservative in some ways and very liberal in other ways.”

Discussing her youth growing up on a farm and her training in the military, Beck reiterated to NowThis about the importance of respect, the lack of respect in today’s political debate, and how America could benefit from thinking less along party lines, and instead seeing people as humans and Americans first. “I want to be liberal and conservative at the same time. I want to be religious and spiritual at the same time,” said Beck. “I want to be male and female at the same time because this is my spiritual journey. I believe that we are the image of God.”

shorter video interview with Beck that directly addressed Trump's tweets has already earned over 2.6M views on the NowThis Politics Facebook channel.
