NEW YORK (January 22, 2019) – NowThis, the number one mobile news publisher in the world, today announced the launch of a new division that will allow for more attention and focus on the brand’s growing list of series and franchises. The launch of the new group creates distinction between two specific divisions: NowThis News Group and NowThis Originals. The News Group will focus on award-winning journalism, original reporting and political coverage - and continue to bring daily news stories through video to social feeds. Originals will focus on the development and production of a slate of new and original shows optimized for distribution across social, streaming and linear platforms.
“NowThis pioneered short-form, video news that is optimized for mobile and social consumption. The brand has grown into a powerhouse for young audiences with more than 10 channels distributed across multiple social platforms, covering various content categories,” said Athan Stephanopoulos, President of NowThis. “Our continued growth has led us to create Originals, allowing us to focus on new formats and also provide a unique opportunity to bring a slate of purpose-driven programming to our brand partners.”
With the introduction of original programming, the brand has seen an increase in watch time of 36 percent year-over-year. To date, NowThis’ shows have amassed over 300M minutes watched.
“We’ve seen incredible success as we’ve expanded into mid and long-form programming over the past year. We’ve explored new genres and formats and reached millions of people with shows covering a wide range of topics. With breakthrough entertainment franchises like NEVER SEEN, Apocalypse NowThis and MANE, we are making shows that connect, entertain and inspire,” said Tina Exarhos, Chief Content Officer at NowThis. “This is an important moment for us as we continue to broaden our reach and expand our storytelling capabilities.”
The Originals team will be overseen by Executive Producer Matt McDonough, who will report to NowThis Editor, Sarah Frank, and will be based in the publisher’s New York office.
Some examples of NowThis’ existing original hits include NEVER SEEN, which showcases first impressions of classic shows and movies from viewers who haven’t yet seen them; MANE which explores the intersection of hair and culture, focusing on a different hair trend each week, from its history to the people who drive it, and the culture that keeps it alive; and Apocalypse NowThis, which examines the different ways in which life as we know it on Earth could be wiped out: from nuclear war, to the rise of the machines, to climate change, to particle accelerator mishaps.
NowThis is the # 1 mobile news publisher in the world with a singular mission: making news engaging and relevant for young adults by humanizing our complicated world, giving insightful context from a youth perspective and revolutionizing how news is consumed today. Launched in 2012, NowThis’ entertaining, inspiring and informative videos created for a mobile generation receive 2.5 billion monthly views. NowThis has 13 content verticals, including: News, Politics, Entertainment, Future, Her, Money, Sports, Food and more.
