NEW YORK, NY (October 6, 2017) – Leading distributed media organization Group Nine Media announced today the formation of “Group Nine Social Studios.” The newly created unit will be tasked with developing original short and mid-form social programming for select external partners and platforms.
The new unit is part of Group Nine Studios (the organization’s production division). The team will be LA-based and led by Senior Director of Development Jeffrey Wisenbaugh and overseen by Head of Development Hayley Lozitsky.
“Group Nine Studios has proven that we’re experts in developing and producing engaging social-first video series,” said Group Nine Media’s Chief Brand Officer Suzanne Kolb. “We’re thrilled to extend that expertise and embark on this partnership with Discovery Digital as they build upon their success and accelerate efforts around original, social video programming.”
Group Nine Social Studios’ first partner is Discovery Communications. This summer, Group Nine produced Discovery Digital’s three-episode SHARK WEEK Snapchat show, which was viewed nearly 17MM times and amassed almost 1MM subscribers. This unit will support the development and production goals of Discovery Digital’s Originals team. The shows produced will be either completely new original series or extend Discovery’s IP and will be specifically created for audiences on Facebook Watch, Snapchat or the Discovery GO platform.
Group Nine is a proven leader in creating programming specifically for social distribution across all platforms. A top 10 video publisher, the company’s four brands collectively do nearly 5B monthly video views and over 120MM social monthly engagements (Source:Tubular). Group Nine is the producer of 24 original Facebook Watch shows including The Dodo’s Comeback Kids: Animal Edition -- which touts the most watched episode on Facebook Watch (internal analytics via CrowdTangle) -- and home to two Snapchat Discover channels (NowThis & The Dodo).
